Accessible accommodation in New Zealand provides access to comfortable accommodation for wheelchair users, disabled, elderly or infirm guests. Before booking your accommodation, you should always confirm with your hosts that adequate provision is available for your specific requirements, be it a general accessibility issue or specific facilities catering for hearing or visual impairment.

Disabled accommodations in New Zealand offer good accessibility to guests. You can expect to find some, if not all, of the following at your accessible accommodation:

• Disabled car parking
• Ramps to the front entrance (covered if possible)
• Hand rails
• Widened doorways
• Spacious accommodation areas
• Accessible on-site facilities (restaurant, spa, swimming pool)
• Flexible check-in/out times
• Accessible fittings and fixtures including reachable emergency buttons, mains sockets and bathroom rails, toilets and showers
• Transfer seats (from wheelchair to bath)

If you are hearing impaired, or travelling with someone who has a hearing impairment, you should check with potential hosts whether they have: visual adaptation aids for telephone ringers, smoke alarms, fire alarms, doorbell, audio loop systems, amplification on telephone handsets and televisions with teletext.

For travellers with visual impairment, it is important to check whether accommodations welcome your guide dog, as well as: having markings denoting changes in floor space and height, braille instructions for appliances and controls and use of large print.
