For a relatively small country, New Zealand has a very long coastline (over 15,000 kilometres) which makes beach holidays or waterside vacations extremely popular with visitors and locals alike. No matter which New Zealand season you experience, staying for a couple of days (weeks or months) at a beach, seaside, coastal accommodation or countryside retreat is highly recommended.
Accommodation on the coastline can be as varied as the environment, but popular (and great value) self-catering choices include baches, beachhouses and bungalows.
Getting away to the bach for a holiday or break from everyday life is part of a Kiwi tradition that is still going strong throughout the country. Traditional baches (or cribs as they are sometimes called in the South Island) are often simple shacks, sheds, disused railway carriages or outhouses cobbled together that have grown organically changing with the needs of the family or the bach users.
Originally, baches accommodated the family, as well as furniture cast-offs, bunks rather than beds, stoves rather than kitchen ranges and often were located in the 'wop-wops' (remote countryside or by the beach). Nowadays, bach holidays vary enormously—from rural roots to luxury, cliff top accommodation. Beach houses and bungalows tend to be less rustic than baches, so take your pick from a taste of Kiwi life or what is typically a more comfortable accommodation choice.
Whether you want to dig out your board shorts and jandals (flip-flops or sandals), fishing rod and bait, surfboards and togs (swimming costumes) or simply get away from it all and relax, a holiday at one of New Zealand's many beach houses, baches or bungalows is an excellent, self-catering choice.
