Trenz is over for another year and I've got to say the team enjoyed mixing it up with a number of our clients during the event. The opening night was spectacular with a fantastic multi-media display which morphed into impressive strobe lit dancers.

The food included fantastic samples of many locally inspired dishes and the wines topped it all off.

With all of this activity promoting New Zealand to international buyers, I wonder just how much is going into marketing New Zealand destinations to New Zealanders?

One statistic I was just looking at was the number of Kiwi's who travel across the ditch to holiday in Australia. The number of visitors from New Zealander totalled 1,032,000 in 2004, over three times the amount that travelled to Australia in 1980. Of this amount, around 750,000 were on holiday or visiting friends. Not surprising, repeat visitors accounted for about 93% of them while the average from all other countries was 60%).

With just under 1.4 Million New Zealander predicted to visit Australia in 2014 are we doing enough to ensure Kiwi's see our country before heading overseas?

For the price of an airfare from Christurch to Auckland almost the same as Christchurch to the Gold Coast, one presumes that the travel price isn't putting many people off from visiting Australia. With this in mind, as a tourism operator it can be a challenge thinking of ways to attract Kiwi's to your corner of the country. Occasionally I'll see Wellington on the TV advertising their region (we're based in Christchurch) and I received a flyer advertising the West Coast the other day but I'd definately see 5 to 10 times the amount of advertising for Australia.

I'm not sure what the answer is. As an individual you can play your part, but the regional organisations will have to carry a fair bit of the load and co-ordinate any activity in this area. And how do you measure it's success? Counting people who fly in and out of the country gives fairly accurate results but New Zealanders are just as likely to jump in the car and drive. Food for thought.
