Lake Taupo Events, September 2009
Located in the centre of New Zealand's North Island, Lake Taupo is famous throughout the world for its trout fishing, pristine waters and hot pools. It also offers visitors fantastic opportunities for snow skiing on a volcano, hiking, jetboating and sightseeing.
In September 2009, Taupo celebrates the start of New Zealand's Spring season with a host of exciting events for running, mountain-biking, motorcycling, racing and hunting enthusiasts, wine and whiskey tasters, book-lovers and brides alike. Read more about the main events below:
- Mizuno Off-Road Half Marathon, 5th September - This 21.1 kilometre course is suitable for first time off-road runners, walkers or more experienced ‘mountain goats’. The course is mostly on a flat scenic road on the edge of Lake Taupo and is marshaled and signposted. View more information about watching or entering the race.
- Racing Taupo Spring Marquee Meeting, 9th September – Hosted by the Taupo Racing Club, this race meeting has traditionally unveiled talented new horses. Races start at Centennial Park on Centennial Drive around midday and are free.
- Taupo 1000 - The toughest off road endurance race in the southern hemisphere—the equivalent of driving a Bathurst 1000 over two days without once driving on a tarmac surface (more).
- Jamis Bicycles Day-Night Thriller, 12th September – Attracting over 4,000 mountain bike riders, from recreational riders to night riding adrenalin junkies, this bike race, known as the Thriller, is a five-person lap race, or continuous relay event over 12 hours (more).
- Suzuki Pumice Blast, 12-13th September – Taupo’s motorcycle trails in the surrounding pine forests provide motorcycling enthusiasts with fun, flowing and challenging surfaces (more).
- Wine and Whiskey Tasting, 10th, 19th, 20th, 24th September – Enjoy learning about wine and whiskey with pinot noir, malt whiskey, vintage Bordeaux and French wine tasting (more).
- Taupo Wedding Show, 20th September - If you can't resist watching gorgeous wedding frocks and seeing the latest in wedding fashions, head to Taupo’s Wedding Show and Bride of the Year competitions (more).
- Wild Food Taupo, 26th, 27th September – Taste the wild side of life at the first Wild Food Taupo festival and find out how to make the most of your hunting catch (more).
- 16th Annual Sika, 26th, 27th September – New Zealand's premier hunting and outdoors show, with over 4,500 visitors expected to attend. (more).
