National Jandal Day, 4th December
You don't really need a reason to go casual in New Zealand, but why not add a pair of jandals (flip-flops) to your outfit on the 4th December to show your support for the work of surf lifeguards throughout the country.
Surf Lifeguards patrol beaches ensuring New Zealand's sandy, surfy playgrounds are enjoyed safely by over four million people, locals and visitors, every year. Surf Lifeguards rescue over 1,500 people from drowning every year and prevent a further 350,000 from getting into difficulty.
Surf Life Saving's annual appeal day sees Kiwis donning their jandals and giving to one of the country's most respected charities. Every dollar raised through the donations or the sale of jandals, keyrings and inflatables goes towards the purchase of rescue equipemnt, training and lifesaving services.
