Brass Monkey Kayak Races

If you think the winter is all about staying indoors and wrapping up warm, then think again. For a hardy few (some may say a foolhardy few), winter hails the arrival of the Brass Monkey Kayak Series. These popular kayaking races are held on the Waimakariri River on the following Sundays: 21st June, 5th July, 19th July, 2nd August and 16th August. The first paddlers set off down the 12-kilometre course at 10:00 am, so be sure to check in at 8:30 am if you want to enter the races on the day.

Whether you choose to watch or enter, the Brass Monkey races offer a great way to spend a beautiful, if cold, winter's morning in the beautiful Waimakariri area. After the races, warm up with lunch and a hot drink at one of the many friendly local restaurants or cafés.
