Bluff Oyster & Food Festival, 21st May
Bluff oysters are among the finest in the world. Grown slowly in the cold, clean waters of the Foveaux Strait, oysters are harvested from March until July (or until the quota is reached). Since the 1860s, Bluff and Stewart Island have been at the centre of oystering in New Zealand. In the early days, it was race to get the first oysters from the oyster beds to the wharf and today it's helicopters that whisk these much-prized oysters away to be distributed throughout the country.
If you are a fan of seafood and want to sample some of the very best and freshest oysters in the world, then head to Bluff for its annual Oyster and Food Festival on 21 st May. It's this small town of Bluff in the far south of New Zealand's South Island that gives its name to the much-loved delicacy, the Bluff oyster. At the festival you can enjoy:
- Seafood including oysters, crayfish, paua (abalone), scallops, salmon, blue cod and mussels
- New Zealand wine, ales and beer
