Speights Coast to Coast, 11th - 12th February
Once again, the Coast to Coast race (now in its 29th year) offers multi-sport athletes the opportunity to push themselves to their limits. This 243-kilometre race is a gruelling test of physical and mental fitness with demanding terrain and competitors at the top of their game. Attracting over 800 racers every year including international entrants, the Coast to Coast is a key multi-sport event in the calendar for both individuals and teams.
The Speight's Coast to Coast crosses the South Island of New Zealand, from Kumara Beach on the West Coast to Sumner Beach on the east coast of Christchurch. Competitors aim to complete:
- 140-kilometre Cycle – In three stages of 55 kilometres, 15 kilometres and 70 kilometres
- 36-kilometre Run – Including a 33-kilometre mountain stage over the Southern Alps
- 67-kilometre Kayak – A run of the grade two Waimakariri River through the Grand Canyon of New Zealand, the Waimakariri Gorge.
Coast to Coast Quick Facts
Top competitors take less than 11 hours to complete the course, whilst the slowest time ever recorded was just over 24 hours. The average age of entrants is 36, the oldest ever was 75 and the youngest 15 (nowadays the minimum age for individual entry is 18). All kayakers must have a Grade 2 kayaking certificate. A refreshing beer at the end of the race is optional!
