ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships
If you're in Wellington during the 9th to 13th March and you enjoy watching action-packed sports, then a rainy or windy day may just drive you towards the ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships at the TSB Bank Arena. This top-class sports arena is in the middle of the city, within easy walking distance of hotels, restaurants and shops. Here you will find the world's best taekwon-do practitioners competing in individual and team events including Patterns, Free Sparring, Power Breaking and Special Techniques. Taekwon-do is the world's most popular martial arts and means to jump or kick with the foot/ punch with the hand or the fist using a certain art.
- Patterns - This is the performance of pre-determined moves against imaginary opponents. Competitors are judged on techniques, power, balance, breathing and rhythm.
- FreeSparring - Two-minute rounds of sparring one on one with no protective gear. The winner is the competitor with the most points for using punches and kicks against his or her opponent.
- PowerBreaking - The event that looks like it really hurts! The aim being to break as many boards as possible with one hit.
- SpecialTechniques - With a series of different flying kicks, the winner is the martial artist who breaks the most boards.
