Cook Islands Holiday Attractions

The Cook Islands offer some exceptional deep-sea game fishing as well as fly and tackle sports fishing. Both the islands of Rarotonga and Aitutaki offer immediate access practically just out of the harbour.

Many species of game fish are abundant, with the surrounding reefs providing an attractive environment for barracuda, yellowfin and skipjack tuna, and marlin. An added Cook Islands holiday attraction is the potential to see humpback whales as they come close to Rarotonga's shoreline on their July to October migration from the Antarctic.

Rarotonga and Aitutaki are also regarded as some of the best scuba diving locations in the South Pacific. Interesting diving sites abound, including caves and shipwrecks, and there is a huge variety of coral reef life to explore.

Snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing and surfing are also popular activities during a Cook Islands holiday.

As with many countries in the South Pacific, the Cook Islands are a popular destination for weddings and honeymoons. Marriages performed in the Cook Islands are recognised internationally, and most hotels offer their own wedding packages or you can engage the services of a wedding specialist to do the organising for you.

Hiring your own car or motor scooter is a great way to explore the Cook Islands attractions, but bear in mind you will need a current Cook Islands licence. This is relatively easy to obtain for a nominal fee and will be a lasting souvenir of your Cook Islands holiday.

Rarotonga Attractions

The central mountainous region of Rarotonga is unpopulated and is an ecological wonderland. This area contains many species of plants unique to the Cook Islands, and can be explored by foot or a guided 4WD tour.

Rarotonga offers plenty of nightlife and excitement with a good selection of cabarets, discos and restaurants.

Seafood is a staple of Polynesian cuisine, and the Cook Islands is no exception, with over 50 restaurants in Rarotonga offering traditional as well as island-style dishes. Most of the Cook Islands hotels also offer extensive menus and usually a traditional island feast served with accompanying entertainment.

Another Cook Islands holiday highlight is the Avarua market. Open every day except Sunday, it offers a myriad of stalls selling food, drinks and crafts and there is often an entertaining competition with local singers showing off their talents. The local fishing catch is also often displayed for sale at the market.

Avarua also offers plenty of opportunity for shopping for locally-made souvenirs, arts and crafts and the famous black pearl jewellery.
