Fiji Overview

Fiji, Fiji travel information

Only 100 or so of the Fiji islands are populated, and the majority are either high islands of volcanic origin or low islands of coral and limestone varieties. These volcanic islands have rugged, mountainous landscapes, ancient volcanoes and rocky shores. Some are so small that you can walk around their white sandy beaches in a matter of minutes.

Fiji is a multi-cultural society with more than half the population being indigenous Fijians and about 44% Indians (primarily of Hindu and Muslim belief).

English is the official language of Fiji, but the Fijian language is also widely spoken, albeit in many different dialects. Most locals are bilingual and many Fijian terms are included in everyday English usage.

Fiji's climate is tropical and temperatures range between 18 to 30 degrees celsius, depending on the season. November and April temperatures are slightly higher than the winter months, as is the humidity and the resulting tropical downpours. However the weather in Fiji can vary considerably between the different island regions.

Fiji Highlights

Fiji's capital, Suva, is located on the island of Viti Levu and is home to about 70% of the population. Suva has a distinctive colonial-period charm and its many tourist attractions include shopping, restaurants, nightclubs, markets, a museum and sightseeing tours.

Just offshore from Viti Levu are several of the popular Fiji holiday resorts, including Beachcomber, Plantation Island, Castaway and Mana.

The Fiji islands are remarkable for their abundant clear blue lagoons, pristine rivers and rainforest-covered mountains. This amazing landscape makes Fiji suitable for a wide variety of recreational pursuits, including snorkelling, surfing, trekking and boating.

Nadi Airport, on the west coast of Viti Levu, is Fiji's main international airport and where most visitors will begin their Fiji holiday. The average flight-time from Los Angeles is 12 hours, and three hours from Auckland.

Fiji has its own currency, the Fijian dollar. Travellers' cheques are easily cashed at local banks and most hotels, and major credit cards are accepted at many shops, restaurants, car-rental agencies and most hotels.

Telephone lines are reliable and most resorts have email and Internet access.

There are basically four types of cuisine you'll encounter in the Fiji islands—Fijian, European, Chinese, and Indian.

Supermarkets and outdoor markets feature a good variety of locally grown and imported fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry and other everyday items.
