Tonga Accommodation

Coral Reef in Tonga, Tonga accommodation

Accommodation in Tonga can be booked as part of a tour package or simply when you arrive, although few offer last-minute or walk-in rate discounts.

Most of the larger hotels and resorts provide telephone access, but few offer internet access for guests. Note that as Sunday is strictly observed as a day of rest, there is no commercial activity on this day.

Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa, on the main island of Tongatapu is an ideal place to base your exploration of the Tongan islands and also offers the best range of accommodation in Tonga.

Nuku'alofa has several hotels, and a selection of bed and breakfast-style accommodation and motels. Outside of the main centre is a sprinkling of backpacker hostels and budget motels and just offshore are a couple of resorts occupying tiny coral islands.

Tongan Outer Islands Accommodation

A brief flight north of Tongatapu takes you to the Ha'apai group of islands, of which under 20 are inhabited. Although there is only one beach resort and little in the way of commercial tourism, the Ha'apai group is a wonderful way to experience the authentic Tongan way of life.

The main village of Pangai is located on Lifuka island, and numbers just 3,000 people. Accommodation is limited, and camping is strictly prohibited, although there are several guesthouses offering affordable accommodation. The beaches on Lifuka are easily accessed.

Further north still is the Vava'u island group, popular for its adventure tourism and offering plenty of accommodation options, including several intimate beach resorts.

The town of Neiafu is the hub of the Vava'u group has a good selection of motels and guest houses at affordable prices. It is also serviced by a good selection of waterfront restaurants, cafes and bars. The area is a popular tourist destination between July and September as humpback whales annually migrate here.

At the far reaches of Tonga, the remote Niuas island group epitomises the traditional Tongan existence, and life here has remained virtually unchanged for centuries.

The main island of Niuatoputapu can be reached with a three-hour flight from Tongatapu, and there is some resort and bed and breakfast-style accommodation.
