New Zealand Airport Car Hire

It is easy to pick up car rentals from New Zealand airports, particularly if booked in advance. However, you may find that you are paying slightly more for your car rentals as companies based at the airport have higher costs in rent for example.

Will I get charged more for rental cars booked at New Zealand airports?

You may find that you get charged more for rental cars picked up from airports for a number of reasons including:

• The premium placed on the 'convenience factor'. At some airports, car rentals are parked within a few hundred metres of arrivals in prime car-parking real estate. (You may find some car rentals are less expensive simply if you are prepared to take a short bus or shuttle journey to a depot outside of the airport grounds.)
• If the headline rental price for rental cars at the airport, check the small print for an 'airport tax'. This can be an additional payment based on the rental cars' airport location.
• If you book one of the rental cars available at the airport, you may pay more simply because you have had less opportunity to shop around for the best deal.

One final thing to remember: If you're driving a rental car out of an airport parking area, make sure your car rentals company representative has given you the means (ticket / cash / parking permit) to leave the airport without incurring parking costs.
