Catch the Ferry to the Beaches of Cook's Coast
Cook's Coast is a popular tourist attraction located south of Whitianga, in the Coromandel region of New Zealand.
From Whitianga Wharf you can catch a ferry to the Stone Steps Wharf, the start of beautiful Cook's Coast. Front Beach, Flaxmill Bay, Shakespeare Cliff, Lonely Bay and Cooks Beach are all popular attractions located within easy reach.
At the base of Shakespeare Cliff to the south is Flaxmill or Homestead Bay. Providing sheltered anchorage for small boats, Flaxmill Bay once had a mill operating on its foreshore. It was here that Captain Cook was said to have careened the Endeavour.
To the south side of the bluff are Lonely Bay and Cooks Beach. Lonely Bay is a small bay cut off by cliffs and totally unspoilt - it's accessible only from the Cook Memorial via a short steep walking track.
Cooks Beach
Cooks Beach is a beautiful beach, boasting three kilometres of fine golden sand with safe waters.
Cooks Beach can be accessed via State Highway 25, taking the Hot Water Beach turn off. You can also get to Cooks Beach by taking the passenger ferry from Whitianga to Ferry Landing. It is a five-minute drive by taxi from Ferry Landing to Cooks Beach.
Cooks Beach is flanked by Shakespeare Cliff to the west and the picnic spot of the Purangi River to the east.
Relax on the beach, go fishing, swimming, sea kayaking and more in Cooks Beach.
