Otago Goldfields Heritage Trail
The Otago Goldfields Heritage Trail covers much of the Central Otago region of New Zealand.
The Otago Goldfields Heritage Trail offers a year-round opportunity to appreciate the golden heritage of the Otago region. More than 20 sites make up the Otago Goldfields Park, chosen to represent the broad range of goldfield sites and field relics.
Gold was discovered in the 1860s and thousands of miners poured into the region, causing similar scenes to the rushes in California and Australia.
Visit Gabriel's Gully, where gold was first discovered, Mitchell's Cottage for an excellent example of the stone masons' craft, the Golden Progress Mine and Earnscleugh Dredge Tailings, Bald Hill Flat and Dead Horse Pinch. Step back in time and experience the legacy left by the gold miners who weathered the harsh conditions in the hope of striking it rich.
Pick up a brochure from the local i-SITE or the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust and follow the signage to historic gold mining sites and cultural heritage icons.
