Road Conditions: State Highway
The South Island's largest city, Christchurch is an entertaining mixture of refined lifestyle and cultural excitement. The tranquil Avon River meanders through the city and adjacent Hagley Park, historic buildings house a lively arts community and restored trams make it easy for visitors to get around. Visit heritage sites, museums and art galleries, and enjoy the highly developed restaurant scene.
There are two routes to Akaroa. State Highway 75 takes you via Lake Ellesmere and Lake Forsyth before it climbs over the hills to Akaroa Harbour. The other route is very scenic, but longer and more difficult to drive. It takes you through the Lyttelton tunnel and around Lyttelton Harbour before making the rugged, cross country journey to Akaroa.
Originally a French settlement, Akaroa is elegant and full of character. The streets wear French names, and local restaurants pay homage to French cuisine. Visit the Akaroa museum and beautifully restored historic cottages. Harbour cruises provide a chance to meet dolphins, penguins and fur seals.
