Far North Overview
The Far North district is the northern-most district of New Zealand. The Far North district stretches from the capes and bays at the northern tip of the Aupouri Peninsula past Ninety Mile Beach to the main body of the North Auckland Peninsula. The Far North enjoys a warm, sub-tropical climate.
There are many small townships dispersed throughout the Far North, along with iconic areas of outstanding natural beauty.
Far North Highlights
The Far North is the Birthplace of our Nation. From the arrival of the first canoes on the shores of the Hokianga Harbour, to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, the Far North combines natural and cultural history everywhere you look.
The Treaty of Waitangi, the document that founded bicultural New Zealand, was signed in the Bay of Islands in 1840. The legacy of Northland's earliest European settlers can be seen in the form of historical buildings and museums that provide a unique insight into colonial New Zealand.
Much of the Far North's extensive coastline remains unspoilt—an aquatic playground for adventure activities and escapist relaxation.
You'll find that Māori culture is still very much alive in this region (32 percent of the population are Māori), and you'll also enjoy the shopping, dining and entertainment possibilities that stem from the distinctive local culture—which embraces art, creativity, organic farming and alternative thinking.
