It has been claimed that no game fishing area in the world has yielded more fish than the Northland coast.
All the World and National Records for Striped Marlin, Yellowtail Kingfish and Snapper are held on this coast. New Zealand Striped Marlins are among the largest in the world, the heaviest Striped Marlin ever recorded (both nationally and internationally) was a whopping 224.1 kg beastie.

Mangonui is famous for its historic buildings and one would not be disappointed touring these buildings that capture the spirit of the past.
The charming historical buildings include the old courthouse constructed in 1892 and the Mangonui Hotel built in 1905. Years ago Mangonui had the only courthouse in the area making it of regional importance. The Mangonui Hotel now enjoys Historic Places Trust classification. The Mangonui Hotel is the heart of the quaint little community with many fun events held throughout the year.
Mangonui also serves as a good base for exploring the Far North region. From here you can travel to Cape Reinga - the northern most point in the North Island and the Ninety Mile Beach - which is in fact only 55 miles or 88 km long. To get to these places one can used one's own transport or Bus Tours including pick-up from your accommodation or customised tours by four wheel drives.
