If you are a nature lover, then a visit to the Chatham Islands is a must. In recent years, conservation programmes have progressively restored the original forest cover and animal life of the islands.

A bird watchers paradise, the Chatham Islands are home to 18 unique species as well as many ocean and coastal dwelling birds.

The islands are also famous for great fishing and seafood. Enjoy a variety of seafood and fresh water delicacies including lobster, paua, scallops, kina, groper, cod, flounder and eel. Fishing and fish processing are the main economic income for the islands. Guided fishing trips are available.

Kermadec Islands

The Kermadec Islands are the only true sub-tropical ecosystem in New Zealand waters. The islands include a variety of tropical fish and corals.

While these islands are not often visited, some tourism operators offer expeditions to the Kermadec Islands. These expeditions can include:

  • Scuba diving in the unique marine ecosystem
  • Snorkeling
  • Guided walks
  • Bird watching
  • Fishing

Sub-Antarctic Islands

Join an expedition to the Sub-Antarctic Islands and see a world hidden to many.

  • The Snares - more birds nest on this small island than there are seabirds around the entire British Isles
  • The Auckland Islands - a beautiful group of islands with lovely vegetation and many bird species
