Peter and Donna Hartley welcome you to The Barn in Marahau, a waterfront paradise nestled at the foothills of the Abel Tasman National Park. We are the closest accommodation to The Coastal Track, a New Zealand great walk. The daily bus service from Nelson will drop you off at the doorstep of our Marahau hostel, so getting here is easy!

The Barn is a traditional Tobacco Drying Shed which was converted into a family home before becoming what is now a popular accommodation provider. This historic building has a unique character with a homely, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The Barn provides you quality budget accommodation, from camping under the shady trees to family rooms, dorms and cabins.

The facilities of our Marahau backpackers and campground include: two well equipped kitchens, New Ablusion Block that have showers with a view of the ocean, hot showers, laundry, BBQ's, comfy beds and linen in our Brand New Dorm Rooms, secure vehicle and luggage storage, internet, cozy lounge with log fire, outdoor social area with pool table, and a Childrens Play Area.

The friendly staff at our Marahau hostel and campground are happy to help with all your activity booking requirements and with so much to do why not stay a while and enjoy New Zealand's favourite National Park?

With the Nelson region consistently receiving the most sunshine hours in the country, our Marahau backpackers and campground is a great destination in winter as well as summer.

In addition to Abel Tasman National Parks crystal clear turquoise waters and golden sands, why not use our Marahau hostel as a base to explore the art and crafts of Takaka, the sacred waters of Waikoropupu springs, Kahurangi National Park, Ngarua Caves and Nelson Lakes National Park including Rainbow Ski Area all within an hour and a half drive.

How To Get Here

Follow the road signs to the Abel Tasman National Park via Marahau.

Marahau is 18 kilometres north from Motueka, and is well sign-posted.

The Barn is located in Marahau, and is on the right side of the road, around the corner after the Abel Tasman Coastal Track entrance.

The drive to Marahau is very scenic, with local art, craft and vineyard attractions.

You can leave your car, camper or bicycle at our base.

Alternatively, arrange a bus from your accommodation in Nelson, Motueka or Marahau.

Typical travel times (car):

• Nelson to Marahau is an hour and 10 minutes
• Motueka to Marahau is 25 minutes
• Marahau to Takaka is an hour and 10 minutes
• Marahau to Nelson Lakes National Park and Rainbow Ski Area is an hour and 30 minutes
• Marahau to Picton two hours and 45 minutes
