History of our Akaroa Accommodation

The original Garthowen was built in the early 1900s and run as a boarding house.

Over the years the house had undergone several alterations and additions. We purchased the property in 2004 with the intention of returning it to it's former glory. Regretfully, the house was discovered to be beyond restoration and the decision was made to demolish the old building, but to rebuild in a similar style.

Recycled native timbers such as rimu and kauri have been used throughout, most recovered during demolition. With it's sweeping verandahs, the elegance and graciousness of the original Garthowen has been recaptured.

Your Akaroa Accommodation Hosts

We have previously operated the Waimakariri Lodge, a luxury bed and breakfast set in the foot of the Southern Alps, near Oxford. On making the decision to move to Akaroa, we decided to stay in the tourism business, and have built a new bed and breakfast in Akaroa, Garthowen, specifically designed to cater for and pamper our guests.

We have two Jack Russell dogs, Bonnie and Jessie. They are part of the family and love interacting with our guests at our bed and breakfast in Akaroa.

Akaroa's Local Activities

To visit Akaroa is like taking a step back in time. Large areas of the village are registered with the Historic Places Trust and strict controls have ensured many of the old buildings and amenities still survive. It is this which attracts many to the village.
