AT greenSpace Christchurch eco accommodation we aim to create a welcoming environment which is healthy for you, us and the environment. We are unique in offering the only Christchurch eco and gay friendly accommodation.
Our house was designed by Alan Simpkin from Eco Homes and built by Phillip Wilkinson Fern of Natural Home Builders. Their brief was to create us a house that would be both energy efficient and sourced from environmentally friendly building materials.
Our eco principles also extend to the day to day running of the household. We are active participants in the local kerbside recycling scheme and compost all food and garden scraps.
In the kitchen, we aim for as much organic as possible, (some products depending on availability). We buy as much produce as we can from Co-operatives, Trade Aid and direct from growers.
We offer you a choice of two lovely rooms: the Pacific Room and the Chocolate Room.
The rooms have their own entrances so that you can come and go as you wish. The en suite bathrooms are decorated in white and stone with blue accents.
Oiled timber floors enhance the contemporary interior design. Enjoy the added features of: comfortable, firm beds, cotton robes, Natural Earth toiletries, hair dryers, and our favourite New Zealand magazines for you to enjoy.
The breakfast table and chairs offers you the option of breakfast served privately in your room or perhaps a quiet place to write letters or postcards.
We are pleased to offer your own tea and coffee making facilities to suit a wide range of tastes. Choices include a range of herbal or breakfast teas (organic where possible) and organic fairly traded instant or filter coffees.
A kettle and coffee maker is provided. We hope you enjoy the home made biscuits on the tray. Milk choices include dairy or non dairy.
The adjoining Breakfast Room provides simple self catering facilities, phone and balcony views over the park.
Due to our solar and eco features, we can guarantee heating and hot water if there is a cut to power. Few accommodation providers in Christchurch can boast this standard of warmth and comfort in winter.
Children are very welcome at greenSpace. We offer free use of a toy box, highchair and a cot.
Families have the option of booking the entire suite of three rooms at a discount. This accommodation would provide a double bed and two single beds. A roll away bed is available for an extra child.
Our house is opposite a primary school with playing fields and two adventure playgrounds which you are welcome to use out of school hours. We have a climbing frame and a variety of bikes, trikes and outdoors play equipment available for your use.
At greenSpace, eco cuisine means using ingredients that are GE free, vegetarian, locally sourced and as much organic as possible. Everything should be fresh and simply prepared at home with natural flavours, colours and textures.
We can cater for your allergy or food intolerance if you let us know at the time of booking.
Vegetarian or vegan evening meals can be provided by request at a cost of $15-$25 pp. Meals can be either served in the Breakfast Room or in your room.
We offer a range of rates to suit most budgets. For more details, visit the Rates page on our Web site.
Yolanda and Rosemary are both New Zealanders, born and bred! Rosemary is from Aria in the North Island and Yolanda from Christchurch, St Albans. In 1991 we left New Zealand for the UK which became our base for exploring the world.
After 10 years living in the United Kingdom, we returned home to Christchurch for a change in lifestyle and for our children to enjoy growing up as kiwi kids. We appreciate living here: we feel like we are on a permanent holiday!
Our interests include racquet sports, fitness, cooking (and eating!), travel and green issues.
We speak English and have both learnt Maori. Our community involvements include the local Vegetarian Society, SANDS, a book discussion group and Rainbow Families.
Professionally, our backgrounds include education and social/community work.
