Bed and breakfast in Franz Josef, on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Knightswood Lodge is just 3 km south of Franz Josef village.
Situated on 24 acres of pasture and native bush and is surrounded by a deer farm, this accommodation in Franz Josef is an ideal quiet haven for those needing time to relax, listen to the bird life, and admire the stunning views.
The rainforest is home to a wide variety of native birds - fantails, tuis, bellbirds, pukekos, wood pigeons and keas which can be seen and heard around the house.
Your host, Gerry, was previously a wildlife ranger and has a keen interest in conservation, native flora and fauna, geology and photography.

Activities of the Franz Josef Area
Heli-Hikes - Franz Josef Glacier is one of the most spectacular glaciers in this region. Combine a scenic helicopter flight over the glacier with a unique guided walk amongst the ice pinnacles, caves and seracs of this pristine alpine environment. A 2½ hour experience.
Glacier Guided Walks - Enjoy the challenge of a half or full day guided walk on the Franz Josef. All equipment provided.
Self-Guided Walks - There are numerous walking tracks accessible nearby, both easy and more challenging. They range from a 20 min. walk to a full day hike including those amongst native rainforest, around beautiful lakes and alongside the glacier, all offering wonderful views.
Scenic Flights - Discover the expanse of the Franz Josef and Fox snowfields. Breathtaking views of the glaciers from a helicopter or fixed wing ski plane with a snow landing.
Lake Matheson - Just a 30 minute drive away. Visit Lake Matheson and enjoy an hour walk around the Lake through native rainforest. See and hear native birdlife, and weather permitting marvel at stunning mirror reflections of Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman in the lake.
Lake Mapourika - If you're a keen fisherman or would just enjoy a swim then Lake Mapourika is worth a visit only 10 minutes away. Salmon and Trout fishing is available here, with or without a guide. Views of Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman on a clear day.
Whataroa - Visit the only White Heron Sanctuary in New Zealand, 20 minutes away. Tours from here on a jet boat to view the magnificent White Heron, Royal Spoonbill and other flora and fauna.
Okarito - Our nearest beach where the mountains and rainforest meet the sea, is only 20 minutes away. You can kayak on the lagoon, take a walk along the beach or view a stunning West Coast Sunset.
