New Plymouth Activities
Dabble your toes in the Tasman Sea as you walk our famous black sand beaches. Watch the surfers, join the swimmers, fossick amongst driftwood. Listen for skylarks in the sand dunes that foreground Mt Taranaki standing sentinel over all.
Buller Street leads down to a beach park only metres from our front doorway. From this park you can:
- Take a 15-minute walk along the coastal walkway into the city centre with its Puke–Ariki (Hill of the Chief) museum, art galleries, restaurants, cafes. World famous Pukekura Park. Shopping is good too
- Continue to the Port of New Plymouth, and Mt Paritutu, a longer walk 45 minutes one way. There are now several new waterfront cafes and restaurants here
- Walk the coastal walkway path towards the Waiwakaiho River, even follow the river up to Lake Rotokare and be stunned by the mountain views
- Follow the Te Henui Stream inland through beautiful parkland reserve and native bush
- Go swimming. During the summer there are two life guard stations operating on our Bluewater Accredited Beach—one of only two in New Zealand. Watch the surfers, and try it yourself. Ask, and lessons can be arranged for you

About Taranaki
Taranaki, on the North Island's west coast, is on a peninsula that juts into the Tasman Sea and is half way between Auckland and Wellington.
The most striking natural feature of Taranaki is the near-perfect volcanic cone of Mt Taranaki that dominates the whole region. From mountain trails, you can see spectacular views of Egmont National Park spread out below and lush green dairy pastures that stretch as far as the eye can see.
New Plymouth and surrounding districts are known for their glorious parks and gardens, particularly the dazzling array of rhododendrons and azaleas on display in spring. Many of the area's magnificent private gardens are open for public viewing year round.
There are 21 attractive golf courses in the city and region, many in park-like surroundings with ocean views. The rugged backcountry makes for exciting canoeing, horse riding, four-wheel-drive adventures and dam dropping. There is a choice of walking tracks on Mt Taranaki—the three-to-five day “Round the Mountain” track is recommended.
