Welcome to Ranui Retreat, our bed and breakfast accommodation in Oamaru. We are eight minutes south of historic Oamaru and 200 metres off the main highway to Dunedin.

Views of Otago rural landscape stretching to the Kakanui Mountains enhance the rural sense of this five acre property of mature oak, elm and ash trees.

The land was originally part of the nearby Totara Estate. The garden of our Oamaru accommodation is planted out in native and exotic trees, shrubs and a newly established olive grove. There is birdsong aplenty.

The heart of Whitestone Waitaki will transport you to a time gone by, a relaxed and very much gentler time. Hewn from the creamy white granular limestone that underlies much of Whitestone Waitaki, Oamaru's unique Victorian buildings have become sought after for historic film sets.

The city is proud of its heritage and the grand old buildings of yesteryear are becoming a major attraction.

These inner City streets echo prosperous times when Penny Farthings raced the roads, gentleman doffed their top hats as ladies in long skirts and bustles swept by while children enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. At numerous times throughout the year the district holds events and dresses in period costumes to celebrate the past.

Ribbons of Heritage Trails weave through the countryside, revealing the history of Waitaki. Explore the Ocean to Alps Trail—one of the finest scenic drives in New Zealand.

The Waitaki region with its stunning, diverse landscape offers a marvelous, natural, clean environment for a whole range active pursuit.

See the thriving colony of Penguins situated minutes from central Oamaru. The local community has fostered the interests of the Penguins by minimizing the threats to the wildlife. Ongoing active measures continue to be adopted so that the Penguin population can thrive in the Oamaru area.

In combination, and with so much to offer, Waitaki is the perfect place to relax. Life operates at a much more civilised pace here than it does in the hustle of the cities and more populated parts of the country so it's very easy to just find your own space to relax and enjoy. The climate is excellent and without extremes and this is reflected in the fact that Oamaru has long been one of the major fruit and vegetable producing regions of New Zealand.
