St Bathans Jail (Gaol) and Constable's Cottage is a historical treasure, located in St Bathans township, providing boutique accommodation in Central Otago en route between the ski fields and vineyards of Central Otago and the wildlife and natural beauty of the Central Otago coastline.
The town itself dates to the early 1860s when gold was discovered there; evidence of this can be seen in the spectacular Blue Lake, formed by the mining processes, and the architecture of the town's remaining historic buildings, many of these registered historic places all close to our holiday home in Central Otago.
Included in the original buildings of St Bathans is the former jail (gaol) and constable's cottage, both built in 1884. The three-bedroom cottage has the following features:
The self-contained jail with queen-sized bed and free-to-air TV, is located on a terrace above the cottage.
The mud-brick Vulcan Hotel (Phone: +64 3 447 3629), built in the 1860s, is a two-minute walk up the main street and offers excellent dining, cooked breakfasts and good coffees as well as interesting local company in its cosy bar.
Continental breakfast is provided for all bookings in both the jail and the cottage.

Or you may like to just spend the day in the sun on the verandah of the cottage and watch the light and colours change on the lake below.
Otago is often called the golden country due to its gold mining associations, vivid autumn colours and apricot orchards. The Central Otago region is the only one to experience a continental climate, having the hottest summers and coldest winters in New Zealand.
Old trails that provided access for thousands of miners in the gold rush of the 1860s can still be seen winding over the hills, along with stone cottages, cleverly-engineered water channels, mines and machinery associated with the gold rush.
Alexandra, the main town on the Clutha River is the centre for stone fruit, particularly golden apricots. The towns of Alexandra, Clyde and Cromwell are ideal bases from which to explore the surrounding historic countryside.
