About Taupo

Taupo is located in the centre of the North Island, about three hours drive south of Auckland.

Its central location makes it easy to take day trips to many of the North Island's most popular attractions, including the glowworm caves at Waitomo, the many thermal parks between Taupo and Rotorua, Rotorua itself, the wine country in Hawke's Bay, and Tongariro National Park with its dramatic volcanic mountains and multitude of hiking trails.

Lake Taupo has a surface area of 616 square kilometres, with a deepest point of 186 metres. Drained by the Waikato River, Lake Taupo has the largest surface area of all lakes in New Zealand, and is the largest fresh water lake in Australasia.

The lake itself was created by the biggest volcanic eruption of the past 5,000 years. The eruption was reportedly so large the sun went hazy in China. Lake Taupo is 90% the size of Singapore.
