Location of our Bed and Breakfast in Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier drains the western slopes of the Southern Alps. It descends from the permanent snowfields at around 2,300 metres where the snow accumulates, to the glacier toe. It then rumbles to approximately 200 metres above sea-level.

Fox Township is 172 kilometres (110 miles) from Hokitika and 119 kilometres (75 miles) from Haast township or 273 kilometres (170 miles) from Wanaka. Travel is easy on fully sealed roads flanked by podacarp forests down the West Coast.

From Christchurch, you can drive down to Hokitika (259 kilometres, 162 miles) and Greymouth (254 kilometres, 158 miles), which will take you on average three to four hours, over Arthur's Pass and descending onto the plains. Or you can relax on New Zealand's greatest rail trips on the TranzAlpine Express from Christchurch to Greymouth.

The drive from Nelson to Hokitika is 338 kilometres (211 miles) and it usually involves a day driving down the Buller Gorge to the coast and then south via Punakaiki and Greymouth. Either route is a spectacular entry to the West Coast.

From Hokitika to Fox Glacier is 166 kilometres (103 miles) and the highway is dotted with small rural towns linked to the history of the West Coast. Gold mining towns, forestry mills and farming are interspersed with sphagnum moss farming and dairying.

Gradually, as you enter the glacier region, the influences of the past glacier advances become obvious with their ancient lateral and terminal moraine walls evident from some of the many highway vantage points.

Finally you reach Franz Josef Glacier and the start of the 26 kilometres (16 miles) over the next three saddles before you finally reach Fox Glacier, which is nestled in the base of the foothills at the head of the Cook River flats.
