Karangahake River Lodge and Campervan Park Introduction

Our Coromandel holiday park, Karangahake River Lodge and Campervan Park, is bounded on two sides by the beautiful Ohinemuri River—popular with swimmers, kayakers and trout fishers alike.

Set amidst parklike surroundings against the backdrop of Karangahake Mountain, the lodge and cabins of our Coromandel campervan park are built in a style similar to the historic gold processing batteries which functioned deafeningly during the gold mining period between 1885 and 1919.

About the Area

In 1895 the Ohinemuri River was declared "a sludge channel" and tailings, mining debris and waste water were discharged directly into the river. This continued until the closing of the last gold and silver processing battery at Waikino in 1952.

Today the mountain and gorge are covered with regenerating punga and natives and the clear, sparkling Ohinemuri River is teeming with rainbow and brown trout.

The mining ruins and history of Karangahake are a wonderful testimony to man's determination and industry in the pursuit of that elusive mineral 'gold'.

Karangahake Gold Mines – These mines were second only to Waihi's Martha mine in gold production. The Crown mine at Karangahake was the first mine in the world (1889) to use cyanide treatment to extract elusive gold from quartz rock.

The Department of Conservation walkways give access to historic mining sites, stunning gorge scenery, a kilometre long rail tunnel and old mine drives. View the ruins of the underground powerhouse. Wonder at the ingenuity and resourcefulness of men in the pursuit of gold during the boom days of 1889 – 1919.

Other activities include:

  • Antique shops in Paeroa (five minutes car)
  • Hot spa pools in Te Aroha (20 minutes car)
  • Surf and sea at Waihi Beach (25 minutes car)
  • Gem factory at Ngatea (25 minutes car)

About the Coromandel

The Coromandel Peninsula lies east of Auckland, on the other side of the Hauraki Gulf.

An impressive, heavily forested mountain range runs right up the middle of this peninsula—it is bordered on each side by kilometres of spectacular coastline.

On the west coast, there's a never-ending parade of beaches, coves and harbours lined with pohutukawa trees. The eastern side of the Coromandel is furnished with an amazing collection of white sand and surf beaches.

The Coromandel's fascinating history is evident in gold mining relics, logging dams and ancient Maori pa (fortified village) sites. The past can also be found in the charming colonial architecture and historical buildings preserved in several towns around the region.
