Local Attractions

Our Northland camping grounds are perfectly placed to take advantage of all the local attractions. There will be something for everyone – nature lovers, adventurers and those just looking for somewhere to relax.

For the energetic, we recommend taking a 15 minute drive from our Matakohe accommodation towards Dargaville where you'll find Tokatoka peak. A moderate hike to the top and what a view! The more adventurous could take a helicopter ride and behold the Kaipara Harbour from the air.

The Kauri Coast offers you a peaceful environment where you can hide amongst the bush clad hills, explore the West Coast and take a glimpse at the way New Zealand used to be. While you are staying at Matakohe Holiday Park make sure to visit the ancient forest of Waipoua. Mingle with trees over two thousand years old, feel the aura, take a walk or hike through this spectacular scenery and experience the peace and solitude that only a forest like this can offer.

If you would like to explore more seaside villages, take a 20 minutes drive from our Matakohe accommodation to Pahi to visit the wharf and one of the largest Moreton Bay fig trees you will ever see!

In Paparoa, a short five minute drive from our Northland camping grounds, you'll find a pub, shops, restaurants and a walking track that runs alongside a creek.

The Kauri Bushmans Reserve is also only a five minute drive away, spend some time here relaxing and view our local Kauri tree.

If you're not up to driving, it's a short stroll from our Northland camping grounds to Matakohe's own Shelly Beach, or you can visit the local cafes and Kauri Museum (Allow yourself around three hours for this must see attraction).
