Oamaru is located 80 kilometres south of Timaru and 120 kilometres north of Dunedin, on the Pacific coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
Oamaru has many local attractions and scenic highlights. Admire Oamaru's historic stone architecture—many buildings feature Oamaru stone, a form of local limestone.
Or marvel at the perfect roundness of the mysterious Moeraki boulders, which lie uncovered by the sea 33 kilometres south of Oamaru.
See the thriving colony of Penguins situated minutes from central Oamaru. The local community has fostered the interests of the Penguins by minimizing the threats to the wildlife.
The viewing facilities in Oamaru mean you can see these wonderful creatures in their natural environment and, often, from up close.
Locally in the Waitaki district there are numerous tramping and hiking opportunities around the many coastal or up-country trails, or, in winter enjoy skiing and snowboarding on the Ohau Range.
The many lakes and rivers provide perfect conditions for freshwater fishing and boating. Or the coastline is also very close for salt water fishing or cruises.
The climate in Oamaru and the Waitaki district is excellent and without extremes. This is reflected in the fact that Oamaru has long been one of the major fruit and vegetable producing regions of New Zealand.
