About New Zealand
Split into two main islands, New Zealand is a country of diverse geographical features—from lush rainforests to vast alpine chains, steaming volcanoes and sweeping coastlines.
The North Island is a land of geothermal activity, golden beaches and sub-tropical rainforests, and its climate makes for a year-round destination. Geysers, mud pools, and live volcanoes are found throughout the region.
The South Island is a land of geographic extremes, from the imposing snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps, to vast plains, glacial-fed lakes and stunning coastal fiords. Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain is located here, flanked by the Tasman Glacier. Much of the island is densely forested.
Highlights of Taupo
Lake Taupo, long known as the Trout Fishing capital of the world, is often described as the jewel in the crown of the North Island.
It is set amidst clean green countryside and spectacular mountain scenery, offering a wide range of activities, adventures and scenic opportunities.
On a quieter note, Taupo also offers every opportunity for you to unwind and relax. Enjoy a swim in the lake or perhaps a picnic on the lake edge.
Scare yourself silly with daredevil antics or float peacefully through the perfect landscape:
- Be a daredevil—try parasailing or skydiving
- Bungy jump over the Waikato River
- Enjoy a scenic floatplane flight over the Lake Taupo area, including Mount Ruapehu
- Watch the rapids at Aratiatia—water is released from the dam at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm daily
- Wander through the beautiful Pureora Forest Park, just one hour from Lake Taupo
