New Zealand consists of two main islands—the North Island and the South Island. The North Island has a 'spine' of mountain ranges running through the middle, with gentle rolling farmland on both sides.

The massive Southern Alps form the backbone of the South Island. About a fifth of the North Island and two-thirds of the South Island are mountains.

Over thousands of years, the process of subduction has seen parts of the New Zealand landscape become submerged. The Marlborough Sounds and Fiordland are examples of high mountain ranges that have 'sunk' into the sea, creating spectacular sounds and fiords.

These areas provide some of New Zealand most picturesque scenery, with steep lush hills plunging down to the deep still bays below. Clear, deep still water surrounded by beautiful bush makes these areas ideal for boating and kayaking.

Fiordland has achieved World Heritage status and is often called the Sightseeing and Walking Capital of the world.

The best base for exploring the Fiordland region is the attractive resort town of Te Anau. From here it is an easy two hours drive to Milford Sound and twenty minutes drive to Lake Manapouri and the start of a Doubtful Sound excursion. The road to Milford Sound is considered to be one of the world's finest alpine drives.

Attractions and Activities of the Area

Situated in Te Anau, Fiordland Great Views Holiday Park is a convenient starting point for Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and the Te Anau Glow-worm Caves.

This is a great starting point for the walking tracks and the Fiordland region, including the Milford, Kepler, Routeburn, Greenstone, Caples, Dusky and Hollyford Tracks.

We provide a track shuttle to and from the major tracks. We also provide free storage at our Te Anau holiday park for vehicles, caravans, boats and luggage while you are walking the tracks.

Activities within walking distance include the Upukerora River, a 250 metre walk for swimming, fishing and kayaking. Observation point which is a short five minute walk, rewarded with panoramic views of Lake Te Anau New Zealand's second largest lake and surrounding mountains.
