Lake Rotoroa Lodge, our Nelson Lakes luxury accommodation, is nestled in the northern extremity of New Zealand's Southern Alps.
Our Nelson luxury lodge is far from the maddening crowds in this isolated, beautiful, unspoiled location surrounded by the forest fairyland of the Nelson Lakes National Park.
From the lodge's lakeside location, guests look to the towering peaks of the Travers Range, splendour only matched by the quality and ambience of the Lodge itself.
The Lodge provides luxurious facilities coupled with old world charm and relaxed personal attention to all our guest's requirements.
We offer friendly and professional New Zealand hospitality, with our world-class reputation for trout fishing, cuisine and service.
Lake Rotoroa Lodge is a member of the New Zealand Lodge Association and regarded by writers around the world as one of New Zealand's most elegant retreats.
Our Nelson Lakes luxury accommodation was chosen by the giant USA television team ESPN as the location to film two major television series featuring brown trout fishing.
Lake Rotoroa Lodge hosted Robert Wagner for one of the series and fishing legend Flip Pallot for the other.
Australia's Frontline productions have also filmed another series for Australian television starring Rob Sitch and Tom Geisner.
Our Nelson luxury lodge was built in the early 1920s, and has been lovingly restored and protected to this day.
The ten individual guest rooms, which have en suite bathrooms, include brass beds replete with feather quilts. Add to that some eccentricities in the décor, artworks, fixtures and fittings and the result is a charming and comfortable New Zealand country house.
The hallway on the ground floor of the two-storey lodge captures the attention the moment you enter the front door. It contains an eclectic mix of objects d'art, paintings, stag trophies from the lodge's early days and, of course, the occasional trout.
Passing our Nelson luxury lodge's well stocked wine cellar, pausing only to more closely examine yet another item of quirky memorabilia, guests arrive at the lodge's elegant dining room, which shares a view of the lake that is almost identical to that recently enjoyed in the sitting room. Here fine dinners are enjoyed, complemented by wines from the region's world-renowned vineyards.

Many different activities can be carried out from this location. Brown Trout fly-fishing is probably the best there is on offer anywhere in the world. Other activities, such as horse trekking, white water rafting, gold panning, craft shopping or a leisurely wine trail, can be organised from the Lodge to make our guests stay even more memorable.
Guests may just wish to relax in the Lodge and unwind with one of the many local Chardonnays available. Whatever the reason, corporate function or vacation, the team at Lake Rotoroa Lodge will ensure your stay is one you will treasure for life. Consider this to be your private club in the South Island's magnificent Nelson Lakes area.
Lake Rotoroa is one of New Zealand's top trout fishing destinations, and perhaps one of the best brown trout fisheries in the world.
Enjoy fly-fishing on crystal clear streams and rivers, with over 26 accessible by road, and another 18 by helicopter, taking you to some great wilderness locations.
Lake Rotoroa Lodge offers a complete service for both experienced and novice anglers. The fly fishing season begins on the 1st of October and ends on the 30th of April. The Lodge has an extensive range of the latest equipment to loan guests who choose to travel a little lighter.
Dry fly and fishing with lightly weighted nymphs tests the skill of the most discerning angler.
Internationally recognised professional fishing guides will show you the art of stalking, spotting and delicately presenting a fly to big brown trout in crystal clear water.
This is the ultimate trout fishing experience and offers some of the most challenging and rewarding fishing in the world at New Zealand's most established fishing Lodge.
Lake Rotoroa Lodge sits right on the edge of the Nelson Lakes National Park on the shores of the park's largest lake, Lake Rotoroa. This park protects 252,000 acres (102,000 ha) of the northern most Southern Alps. During the last Ice Age, massive glaciers gouged out troughs in the mountainous headwaters of the Buller River. Today these troughs are filled by Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa, surrounded by craggy mountains.
The forests are full of birds like tomtits, tui, robins and the tiny rifleman, New Zealand's smallest bird. South Island kaka are also present.
A highlight in the park is the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project, which aims to create a pest-free refuge for the recovery and re-introduction of native species in the area. It provides an ideal opportunity to see conservation work at first hand, and to enjoy and appreciate the unique natural attractions.
