Our West Coast beach houses are set in surroundings where Aotearoa is as it used to be—lush, unspoiled and natural. Gentle Annie is a coastal enclave with its own warm and frost-free micro-climate.

Bounded by the Tasman Sea, the mighty Mokihinui River and beautifully ancient Nikau-fringed native bush, our beautiful seaside accommodation is an excellent place to set up base. Explore our incredible surroundings, or just relax and enjoy your time away from a hectic life, or the main tourist route if you're a guest to New Zealand.

Gentle Annie is within an hour from many scenic attractions of the Northern Buller Region—north to Kahurangi National Park, Heaphy Track, Oparara Valley with its Limestone Arches and Honeycomb Caves; and south to Charming Creek Walkway, Denniston Plateau, Cape Foulwind Seal Colony and Punakaiki Pancake Rocks.

Just imagine sitting out on the verandah overlooking the Tasman, thousands of acres of native bush behind you, millions of miles of ocean in front, its sound a constant background that relaxes and soothes.

Gentle Annie is the place to get away—all our houses are distant from each other, so that it feels like you're the last people on earth. This is the real New Zealand you have been looking for.

Our West Coast Beach Houses

Rata Lodge – Sleeping a maximum of 27, the Rata Lodge is situated on an elevated site overlooking the tidal estuary and river meeting the Tasman Sea. A great site to watch the famous West Coast sunsets and twilights.

Riverview Home – Sleeping eight, the Riverview home is on an elevated natural site overlooking the Mokihinui River and Buller Bay coastline with a picturesque backdrop of subtropical native forest.

Beach Cabin – Sleeping six, and nestled below the subtropical forest, the Beach Cabin has a view of the sea with only a one-minute walk to the beach. It is fully self-contained, meaning you could go days with just you, the forest and the ocean. The cabin's private, sheltered location makes it a great place to relax and get away from it all.

Cabbage Tree Beach Cottage – A two-storey 'woodsy' two-bedroom, beach-front home on an elevated site from which views of the coast, nikau and rata forest can be enjoyed in the open plan living/kitchen area.

The balcony puts you right amongst the natural scenery as does the courtyard with it's open fireplace for outdoor leisure. The Cabbage Tree house is also fully self-contained, meaning it's all just yours for the duration of your stay.

Campsites – For tents and mobile homes etc, we have unpowered sites in a variety of locations. Showers and toilets at the Cowshed camp. The café can be used by campers as a reading, meeting, eating, and games room.

The Café at Our Seaside Accommodation

Centrally located at Gentle Annie is New Zealand's only restaurant in a once operating cowshed. Situated facing the sea and surrounded by gardens and grassy play areas, eating is enjoyed either outdoors or indoors in a lovingly restored shed with local timbers and fish pond set amongst ferns.

The Cowshed is an ideal venue for functions such as weddings, conventions and family reunions. Open seasonally, and functions can be arranged for anytime of the year. Hours vary. B.Y.O. liquor licence.

Attractions and Activities at Our Seaside Accommodation

At the Cowshed there are areas provided for petanque, horseshoes, volleyball, cricket, table tennis and other games.

Ask your friendly hosts when you arrive about some of the lesser known secrets to discover while staying at Gentle Annie, like where to forage for your own feed of fresh mussels, where to find the glow-worm tunnel that lights up like a star-filled night sky after dark, or where the best place for a typically kiwi dinner might be.

Other activities such as horse riding, kayaking, cycling, fishing and surfing are all available and can be arranged through your hosts at Gentle Annie.
