The Pier Hotel offers hotel accommodation in Kaikoura in an historic building, built especially for the fishing fleet and whalers at the turn of the 19th century. Some 122 years on...
This Kaikoura hotel has had many owners and just as many colourful characters over the years. It is currently owned by a gentleman who also owns other establishments, but prefers to be a hands on owner in this hotel. With breathtaking views, you will see why he chooses to live and work here in Kaikoura.
The uniqueness of this Kaikoura icon, apart from the breathtaking views of the Kaikoura Ranges and Ingles Bay, is that it still retains the appearance and charm of yesteryear, even though it has had to endure small facelifts over the years.
It is a true 'kiwiana' pub style residence with modern touches that enhance its comfortablity and ambience. Plenty of car parking is available on site.
The 10 rooms upstairs in this hotel accommodation in Kaikoura are configured into single twins and king-bed rooms (share facilities as in keeping with the 122-year-old era of the hotel). The majority of the rooms have access onto the sunny balcony, where many a breakfast and evening cocktails have been enjoyed to the smell of the sea and sun and views. Sunrise and sunsets are in a word—awesome!
The bar in our Kaikoura hotel is cosy and has a fireplace and window benches to enjoy the views from. The walls are adorned with ancient photos of yesteryear all pertaining to the hotel and fishing era of bygone years. The main restaurant has a warm ambience and friendly feel.
The menu changes seasonally to enable diners, both local and visitors, to partake in the freshest produce available. The hotel has a reputation for serving some of the best seafood available and also its aged beef. No wonder this place is rated as one of the best seafood restaurants in the region.
Local fishing boats speckle the bay and on fine mornings many amateur boaties can be seen zipping about trying their luck with fishing and cray pots. Groups of dolphins and orcas can often be seen frolicking in the bay along with a regular lone bull fur seals.
All that Kaikoura has to offer in activities can be done from here via phone, and our courtesy coach is kept busy running guests and diners back and forth to their various destinations.
Year-round the hotel specialises in catering to fishing groups, biker groups, car enthusiasts (including rallies), charters, corporate retreats and specialised events. Murder Mystery weekends are featured during winter.
The hotel also caters to contractors who may need to stay in Kaikoura for work purposes. Cut lunches, set menus etc. are made to suit the budgets available.

Kaikoura offers many adventure activities for all to enjoy including:
Whale watching, seal and dolphin swimming, access to seal colonies, waterfalls, sea kayaking, swimming, surfing, tramping and hiking, mountain bike riding, horse riding, winery tours, cave exploration tours, skiing and snowboarding, four wheel driving and much much more.
Kaikoura is two hours north of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand.
Majestic mountain ranges tower 2,600 metres above Kaikoura, and in winter are covered in snow.
Tucked into the shelter of a peninsula jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, Kaikoura has many water activities to offer. Fur seals lounge on rocks just metres from the shore, dusky and Hector’s dolphins frolic in the sea within sight of town, while only a few kilometres further out, giant sperm whales haunt the depths. The sperm whale can be seen all year round off Kaikoura and is the third largest whale in the world, only beaten by the blue and fin whales.
