About Wharekauhau

Wharekauhau (pronounced "forry-ko-ho") is a Maori word meaning "place of knowledge". In olden times the Tohunga, or holy men, came here to learn their ancient tribal lore.

Guest accommodation at our luxury lodge is provided in charming cottages located throughout the grounds, all within easy walking distance of the main house. Each cottage is special and placed to take full advantage of the magnificent views which Wharekauhau offers to mountain, bush, sea and sky.

All guest cottages have the option to interconnect, so families and friends travelling together have the advantage of being able to interconnect with other rooms booked in their group.

Private guest suites within the main lodge offer solitude and comfort in splendid yet unpretentious surroundings. Each suite has a super king sized four poster bed, spacious private bathroom, open fireplace, fully stocked bar and deep comfortable sofas and chairs.

Plastered walls, richly carpeted floor and glowing wooden beams contribute to an intimate atmosphere of warmth and elegance.

At the heart of it all, the main lounge, grand in design, intimate in feel; Expansive sofas and deep armchairs are dotted about, inviting guests to pause for conversation, a quiet glass of wine, or to simply relax and take up a good book.
