About the West Coast

Copyright: Rimu Lodge. Rimu Lodge, Hokitika Lodge, Hokitika Accommodation

The West Coast of the South Island is the narrow strip of land that's bordered by the Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea. Retaining the feeling of the pioneer frontier, it's a wild place of rivers and rainforests, glaciers, and geological treasures. Legends and stories cling to every feature of this rugged landscape.

The Maori were the first to discover the West Coast, in their search for the elusive pounamu, also known as nephrite jade and greenstone. When the Europeans arrived, gold fever took over the region, and many stayed for farming and forestry.

Isolated from the rest of New Zealand by the Southern Alps, the people have developed a distinctive culture of their own. Known as Coasters, they are known for friendliness and hospitality.
