The Bay of Islands is located in the Northland region of the North Island of New Zealand. Close to the most northern tip of New Zealand, the Bay of Islands is 60 kilometres north-west of Whangarei.
Captain Cook, the first European to visit the area, named the region in 1769. The Bay of Islands was the first area in New Zealand to be settled by Europeans and is the cradle of New Zealand History.
Just a five-minute drive away is the Waitangi Treaty House where the Treaty was signed between British and Maori in 1840. Historic buildings, as well as a wealth of quality art and craft may be found in neighbouring Kerikeri, just a 20 minute drive away. Russell is a leisurely passenger ferry ride across the Bay.
