Christchurch is close to many fine facilities and top New Zealand attractions. Known as the 'Garden City', Christchurch has many beautiful parks and gardens throughout the city.
Expect a high standard of cuisine wherever you go—restaurants and cafes make the most of the region's delicacies and local wines. You can also take a leisurely journey down the Avon River in a punt.
Whatever the season, you'll find a non-stop programme of Christchurch entertainment with events like the Festival of Romance, the International Buskers Festival, Winter carnival, Showtime Canterbury, the Ellerslie International Flower Show and various shows and events held at the CBS Canterbury Arena (previously called the Westpac Centre, also known as the Westpac Arena and Westpac Stadium).
About Canterbury
From the silvery beaches of the East Coast to the peaks of the Southern Alps, the Canterbury landscape is spectacular. Big scenery is the order of the day—huge panoramas of ocean or mountains, great sweeps of pastureland and massive amounts of sky.

An hour and 20 minutes to the east of Christchurch is the beautiful Akaroa Harbour. The harbour is actually the crater of an extinct volcano. Nestled on the slopes, Akaroa Township has a distinctly French flavour. The French tried to colonise New Zealand from this point. It's now a haven for holiday makers. Enjoy the nature cruises on the harbour and the great cafes, shops and restaurants in the township.
Two hours north of Christchurch is Kaikoura, where the mountains meet the sea. Fur seals lounge on rocks just metres from the shore, dusky and Hector's dolphins frolic in the sea within sight of town, while only a few kilometres further out, giant sperm whales haunt the depths.
Not far from Kaikoura is the scenic alpine and thermal village of Hanmer Springs – this spa town offers a host of outdoor activities including skiing, mountain biking, forest walks, river rafting and bungy jumping.
South of Christchurch are the Ashburton and Timaru districts. Ashburton district is home to many exciting activities including skiing, hot air ballooning and salmon fishing. Timaru district features attractive towns, rolling green hills, lush pasture and braided rivers.
With so much to see and do within an easy radius of Christchurch it is recommended that any stay should allow enough time to enjoy this rich diversity.
From the grand mountains to the sparkling Pacific Ocean, the grand Canterbury Plains and Christchurch City form an integral part in any "Kiwi Stay".
