Looking across the Hauraki Gulf from Auckland, the north of the Coromandel Peninsula can be seen on the horizon. Although only 90 minute's from Auckland, the Coromandel feels like it's a world away.
The jagged, volcanic hills of the Coromandel Peninsula still retain much of their original rainforest, including giant kauri trees. Although there are great hiking trails in the forested hills, probably the greatest attraction is its spectacular coastline of sandy beaches, coves and harbours that provide boundless opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming.
While in the area visit Hot Water Beach, dig in the sand and relax in a hot spring. Cathedral Cove is a must. Enjoy the beauty of the marine reserve, snorkelling is a great way to see the under water world of this wonderland. Try your luck fishing off the beach or in the dingy, there's nothing like fresh fish.
Not far north are pristine beaches and little coves to explore or take a short hike through the many trails, encounter the mighty kauri tree, a native to this area.
The Coromandel Peninsula is renowned for its art and craft. Take a unique piece of New Zealand home with you!
The Coromandel's history is reflected in charming colonial architecture and historic buildings found in the small towns around the region, which had their heyday in the mid 1800's following the discovery of gold.
