About Dunedin

Dunedin was founded on the picks, harpoons and hard toil of gold miners, whalers and early Scottish settlers over 150 years ago.

Much of Dunedin's early wealth and enterprise has left a tangible mark on the city today. Its name is the old Gaelic one for Edinburgh—appropriate since the city was established by Scottish Presbyterians.

The city is renowned for its proximity to incredible wildlife. Visits to see the world's rarest penguins, the world's only mainland breeding colony of the Royal albatross and rare New Zealand sealions are all possible within a short drive of the city centre.

• Visit the Royal Albatross Centre, Taiaroa Head, Otago Peninsula. It's the site of the only mainland breeding colony of Royal albatross in the world
• Monarch wildlife cruises can take you to see albatross, seals, blue penguins, shags and other marine and bird life
• For a close-up look at New Zealand marine life, find your way to the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre
• Penguin Place is the yellow-eyed penguin (hoiho) conservation reserve on Otago Peninsula--you can hide and watch the penguins as they go about their daily lives

Larnach Castle – Larnach Castle, located on the Otago Peninsula, is New Zealand's only castle. William Larnach - Minister of the Crown, banker, financier and merchant Baron, built the castle for his beloved first wife, Eliza Jane Guise.

Construction began in 1871 and 200 workmen laboured for five years before the family moved in. Gifted European craftsmen worked for eleven more years to embellish the interiors with the finest materials from around the world. The ornate interior carving, detailed stonework, woodcarving, plasterwork and glass are outstanding.

The castle consists of forty-three rooms and a large ballroom. It is open for viewing every day.

Moeraki Boulders – The famous Moeraki boulders lie scattered along a beach 40 kilometres south of Oamaru. According to Maori legend, the boulders are gourds washed from the great voyaging canoe Araiteuru when it was wrecked upon landfall in New Zealand some 1000 years ago.

Scientists explain the boulders as septarian concretions formed about 65 million years ago. Crystallization of calcium and carbonates around charged particles in muddy undersea sediments gradually formed the boulders in a process taking as long as four million years.

The soft mudstone containing the boulders was raised from the seabed around 15 million years ago and sea erosion is exposing the erosion-resistant boulders.
