Hokitika is one of the main centres on the West Coast—the hub of the early gold rush. Make sure you allow enough time, as there's lots to see and do in Hokitika:
- At the National Kiwi Centre you can see kiwi birds in a nocturnal display
- Westland's WaterWorld features the indigenous Kokopu, a prehistoric fish, and freshwater eels
- A range of local craft galleries exhibit everything from hand blown glass and gold nugget jewellery to wood craft and New Zealand jade, also known as pounamu, or greenstone
- Visit the gold mining town of Ross, one of the deepest mining operations in the Southern Hemisphere
The Glaciers
On the West Coast, remnants of the ice age cascade from vast snowfields of the Southern Alps to valley floors just 300 metres above sea level. Nowhere in the world's temperate zones are glaciers so accessible.
A range of companies offer guided excursions to explore the spectacular ice formations. All companies provide professional guides that give full explanations regarding the geological features, flora and fauna of the area.
Helicopter and fixed wing aircraft also provide scenic flights and snow landings amidst New Zealand's highest peaks overlooking the glaciers.
The villages of Franz and Fox Glacier are good bases from which to explore the glaciers. A range of walks exist surrounding the glaciers that provide excellent vantage points for viewing the glacier as well as exploring rainforest environments.
During your stay at our Hokitika motel, be sure to take a guided walk onto the Franz Josef or Fox glacier. The glaciers are unique in the fact that they extend from New Zealand's highest peaks to valley floors surrounded by temperate rainforests.
