About Kaikoura
Surrounded by majestic mountains and a multi-hued ocean, Kaikoura offers many attractions and activities to support its status as one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in New Zealand.

In Maori legend, Maui placed his foot upon the Kaikoura peninsula to steady himself while he 'fished-up' the North Island. The Maori name Kaikoura translates to 'meal of crayfish', and today Kaikoura is renowned for its seafood and the diversity of marine life and marine-based activities.
The first whaling station was established here in 1843, however whalers turned to an alternative means of existence when the numbers of these giant cetaceans dwindled. Today Kaikoura lies within the Southern Hemisphere Whale Sanctuary.
These days Kaikoura's core activity is tourism. Beyond its scenic magnificence, culinary delights and legendary status within Maori culture, few places in the world can satisfy adventure and eco-tourism oriented activities the way Kaikoura does.
Travellers visit from all parts of the globe to delight in the experience of a "close-at-hand" encounter with Sperm Whales and acrobatic Dusky Dolphins, New Zealand Fur Seals and much, much more—all in their own natural environment.
