Kaikoura boasts a marine environment so rich in nutrients that it attracts some of the most magnificent creatures. Among them the giant Sperm Whale which can grow up to 20 metres in length and has the largest brain of any animal alive. In addition to the sperm whale a number of other species may be seen, depending on the season, as they follow their migratory route.
This unique marine experience also provides an opportunity to sight New Zealand fur seals, dusky dolphins, the rare and endangered hectors dolphins, and a wide variety of sea birds including the Royal Albatross.
The town is one of the leading eco-tourism destinations in the country with a wealth of uniquely memorable experiences to offer.
During the mid 19th century the European settlers established a number of whaling stations. Sealing was also prevalent.
Kaikoura has an abundance of aquatic and bird life. The Peninsula provides the meeting place for two strong ocean currents which converge in the deep water canyons and plunge to incredible depths just a few kilometres from the shore. The result is a unique ecosystem which sustains the many marine creatures to be found here.
Kaikoura, is also an important fishing port, is a Mecca for seafood lovers with ample fresh delicacies for all. Local specialties include grouper, cod, mussels, paua (abalone), and of course the town's namesake—Crayfish (lobster).
This area is a real adventure playground and offers an impressive selection of outdoor and recreational pursuits. A unique combination of ocean and mountains offers stunning coastal alpine scenery and a host of eco-tourism oriented activities, these include:
