Rotorua Highlights

Rotorua is one of the original tourist destinations in New Zealand—it has been welcoming visitors for more than 200 years.

From the moment you arrive in Rotorua you'll know you're somewhere quite different. There is a pervasive smell of sulphur, and at nearby geothermal hotspots there are spouting geysers, acrid-smelling mud pools bubbling and belching, and warm geothermal pools and ponds that create a kaleidoscope of colour.

If nature doesn't provide enough excitement, then you can top-up with some man-made extreme adventure. Try rap-jumping down a mountain face, jumping from a plane at 9,500 feet in a tandem skydive, sledding on a toboggan down white water rapids, jet boating, luging down a local mountain; or you might fancy tumbling head over heels down a hillside in a Zorb, a giant see-through ball.

The Rotorua region is one of New Zealand's prime trout fishing spots—you're practically guaranteed a catch, especially if a local professional guide is hired. Many of the volcanic crater lakes are home to a plentiful stock of trophy-sized rainbow trout.

After a hard day's sightseeing or strenuous activity a dip in a thermal spa is totally relaxing. In the evening you may be in the mood to experience a taste of Maori culture at a performance of song and dance, followed by food cooked in a traditional hangi, an earthen oven.

About New Zealand

With vast open spaces filled with stunning rugged landscapes, gorgeous beaches, often spectacular geothermal and volcanic activity, a temperate climate and fascinating animal and plant life, it is no surprise that New Zealand's pure natural environment is so attractive to visitors from other countries.

The great advantage of New Zealand is there are many different landscapes, environments, and ecosystems so close to each other. New Zealand consists of two main islands—the North Island and the South Island. In addition, Stewart Island and many smaller islands lie offshore.

The North Island has a 'spine' of mountain ranges running through the middle, with gentle rolling farmland on both sides. The central North Island is dominated by the Volcanic Plateau, an active volcanic and thermal area.

The massive Southern Alps form the backbone of the South Island. To the east of the Southern Alps is the rolling farmland of Otago and Southland, and the vast, flat Canterbury Plains.
