About Rotorua
Rotorua is one of the original tourist destinations in New Zealand—it has been welcoming visitors for more than 200 years.
At nearby geothermal hotspots there are spouting geysers, boiling mud pools and warm geothermal springs. Silica terraces are naturally decorated with a kaleidoscope of colours.
Rotorua is fast becoming known as Nature’s Spa of the South Pacific. After a hard days sightseeing or strenuous activity, visitors can relax with a soak in the healing waters of the geothermal hot springs, or totally unwind by choosing from a selection of therapeutic spa and massage therapies.
- Visit the giant Californian redwood trees in Whakarewarewa Forest—walk, or ride a horse or mountain bike along the trails.
- Hike on a day trip to the top of the majestic Mount Tarawera where the more adventurous can enjoy a scree run down into the crater!
- Choose from a variety of lake and river excursions—cruise, kayak, raft or white-water sledge
- Cruise on the Lakeland Queen, a traditionally styled paddlewheel vessel
- Jet boat through a breathtaking wonderland
- White-water rafting on the thrilling rapids of the Rangitaiki River, and New Zealand’s highest commercially rafted waterfall on the Kaituna River
- The famous Maori love-story of Hinemoa and Tutanekai is brought to life with the day trip on Lake Rotorua out to Mokoia Island
Geothermal Activity—The Pohutu Geyser at Whakarewarewa in Rotorua erupts in a steamy display of the Earth’s awesome power.

From the moment you enter Rotorua, you know you are somewhere quite different. Sneaky threads of steam issue from parks, pathways and streets and the occasional scent of sulphur wafts through the air—a hint of what’s in store, you don’t need to look far. Minutes from the city centre, geysers of steaming water roar from the ground. Pools of bubbling mud gurgle and belch.
In geothermal fields around Rotorua, steam rises from placid lakes and flowing streams. Dazzling silica terraces display a kaleidoscope of colour. Towering volcanoes, now sleeping giants, are unmistakable reminders of the landscape’s turbulent past. Extinct volcanic craters provide the vessels for Rotorua’s crystal lakes.
