The identifying of Taumarunui “Heart of the King Country” originated around the early 1900s. This came from a Maori guardianship which had been put in place some 50 odd years earlier. The town of Taumarunui became the centre of this guardianship. The area around Taumarunui is also the meeting point of three predominant tribal boundaries.

Historical landmarks for each of the three tribes surround the town with a quiet spiritual presence of friendship, within the area where the four winds meet.

The Tongariro National Park is the second oldest National Park in the world and has a World Heritage status. The park also accommodates New Zealand's largest commercial ski fields, Whakapapa and Turoa, providing a significant visitor attraction and supporting infrastructure.
