South Westland Attractions

White Heron Sanctuary – Visit New Zealand's only White Heron (Kotutu) nesting colony. Royal Spoonbill and other bird life in the Waitangiroto nature reserve.

Visitors wishing to view the white herons nesting are advised that the nesting season is from late October to March.

Tours run under concession with the Department of Conservation, and all tours are accompanied by a professional guide.

Franz Josef Glacier or Fox Glacier – Take a guided walk onto the glaciers. The glaciers are unique in the fact that they extend from NZ's highest peaks to valley floors surrounded by temperate rainforests.

While you're here you may also explore the unique heritage of our lowland rain forest. Feel the spirit of early pioneers from days gone by, while enjoying the closeness of this vast virgin landscape.
