Taihape Accommodation

River Valley Lodge River Valley Lodge, grounds and gardens River Valley Lodge Accommodation

Tucked away at the base of the Ruahine Ranges and Mt. Aorangi, on the banks of the Rangitikei River, River Valley Lodge is the perfect escape from the stress of every day life. We have a range of accommodation options from backpacker style bunk rooms, to campsites through to deluxe Riverside Suites perfect for a romantic weekend away.

  • The main lodge has a cafe, bar and lounge area
  • A well equipped guest kitchen is available for self-catering
  • We offer free WiFi to guests staying in our deluxe guest rooms
  • We have a spa on site with a hot tub, wood-fired sauna and infa-red sauna

Bunk Rooms – For those on a budget, or for groups we recommend our shared bunk rooms. Each room sleeps up to 6 people and guests can use the shared kitchen, toilets and showers. All the bunk rooms have a view out over the gardens and waterfall opposite the lodge.

Deluxe & Riverside Guest Rooms – Enjoy a high standard of comfort after your day of adventure! Each of our deluxe rooms features it's own unique decor. All our deluxe rooms have an ensuite bathroom, with under floor heating. Each bathroom is tiled in it's own distinctive pattern reflecting the local environment. Each of the guest rooms can be either double (king bed) or twin. In addition some rooms also have a single bed meaning the room can also be used as a treble. The deluxe rooms all have views of the gardens and native bush, and our riverside rooms are situated next to the river.

Families & Groups

For adventuring families, or just a group of friends, we also have a larger family room. With a private bathroom, king sized bed, and two sets of bunks, this room can be a great hideaway for a night or two if you are taking part in one of our family adventures.

For families with older children, we suggest booking the "Paua" deluxe room, and arrange to put the children in "Seaglow", a small bunk room next door. A good solution for both children and adults!

Camping

The camping area is conveniently located adjacent to the Lodge, set amongst gardens and trees. Campers are able to use the customer kitchen to cook for themselves, or join us in the restaurant of the main Lodge. As River Valley Lodge is not a camp ground as such, campers are limited to two consecutive nights. Campers have access to the shared toilets and showers at the lodge.

Restaurant & Bar

At River Valley we major in traditional country style cooking. This means roast meals at night, with a mix of seasonal vegetables. Entrees are often soups or fresh salads. Our on site organic vegetable gardens supply many of our vegetables, ensuring freshness and taste. All our meat is free-range or organic, grass fed.

Breakfast is your choice of Continental or cooked. We are open for casual dining, but we do require you to book ahead.

The Fulcrum Pit Bar – Some great stories get told here. After a hard days adventuring, or an even harder one relaxing, this is the place to settle down for a couple of "quiet" ones. An extensive range of beers, wines and spirits are carried. The large fireplace in the lodge offers a cheery sight, and comfortable atmosphere in the winter.

Rangitikei River Rafting

River Valley whitewater rafting

River Valley have been rafting on the Rangitikei since 1982 and now have 3 generations of river guides in the family - giving us experience, knowledge and insights that have been passed on over the decades.

Grade 5 White Water Rafting – Our grade 5, white water rafting trip is often recognised as one of the best half day trips in the world! With 10 major rapids on this 11 km run, plus numerous smaller rapids, there is plenty to get excited about. We are one of the few companies in New Zealand to run our white water trip all year round.

Scenic Rafting – Fun rafting for all the family! With over 30 Grade 2 (easy) rapids, amazing scenery and a riverside lunch, the 13 km section of the Rangitikei River downstream from the Lodge is perfect for all ages. These trips are ideal for families, school groups and clubs or organisations where not all members want the full Whitewater Rafting experience.

Multi-Day Trips – Here at River Valley exploring rivers is our passion. Each river has its own character and a multi-day river rafting adventure with River Valley offers a rare opportunity to gain in-depth insight into these magnificent rivers as you experience some of the most beautiful scenery New Zealand has to offer. We offer 2-6 day rafting trips on the Rangitikei and Ngaruroro Rivers as well as wooden dory trips on the Whanganui River.

Horse Trekking

River Valley horseback riding

Experience the freedom of riding using Natural Horsemanship techniques. River Valley Stables has something for everyone from a half day horse trek, to a multi-day horse riding holiday. We have rides for all abilities.

At River Valley Stables we train our horses using natural horsemanship techniques and choose to ride our horses bit-less and barefoot (no metal in their mouths, or on their hooves). Your adventure starts with a horsemanship session, building a trusting relationship between you and your horse. It does not matter if you are new to horses or they have been a part of your life forever.

Then, ride out into the beautiful countryside so you can explore the epic back country of NZ and enjoy the outstanding vistas looking out to the Ruahine Ranges and beyond. You will be riding over the hills, taking in the spectacular scenery, and if you are up for it, cantering through the fields.
